What Are Your Options In HDMI Converters?

If you have an older television or AV (audio/video) component that lacks an HDMI port, there's no need for despair. Although an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connection provides the highest quality audio and video transfer in just one cable, you can still use your existing television and components together even without an HDMI port with an HDMI converter. Examples include:

HDMI to composite converters

Composite cables are the oldest and simplest cables for connecting AV components to a television. They consist of a single yellow video cable and a red and a white cable for stereo audio. They are the lowest in overall quality in AV connections, but are adequate for many individuals.

You have two choices available in HDMI to composite converters. You can buy cables with an HDMI connection on one end and red, white, and yellow connections on the other end, or you can buy a converter box, that has an HDMI port on one side and yellow, red, and white ports on the other side.

You will still need to use an HDMI cable and a set of composite cables if you choose the converter box. If the cables are already connected to the television, and are hard to reach, the converter box may be the best choice. Moving a large television is not fun, and cables collect a surprising amount of dust if they've been connected for awhile.

A variation on the model is the HDMI to "S" video and composite audio converter. This converter simply replaces the yellow composite video connection with a slightly superior "S" video connection.

HDMI to component video converter

Component connections are the next step up in video quality, and are represented by three video cables in green, red, and blue. These cables are capable of transmitting video in 720p or 1080i resolution, which is high definition, but not comparable to an HDMI connection.

Like composite converters, you can choose a hybrid cable or a converter box. If you choose the converter box, you will need component cables and an HDMI cable. You will also need red and white audio cables, unless your television and accessory both have a coaxial cable port or an optical cable port, both of which transmit surround sound for multi-channel sound systems.

HDMI to DVI converter

A DVI (digital video interface) connection transmits video with the same resolution as HDMI, but only video. DVI connections were the last step before the introduction of HDMI and are found in some of the huge projection televisions that were popular before the introduction of flat screen televisions.

Coaxial or optical audio ports are often coupled with DVI connections on older televisions and accessories in order to achieve digital audio with the digital video provided by a DVI connection.

HDMI splitters.

Sometimes you just don't have enough HDMI ports on a television. You can choose from a mechanical switch, which has one HDMI male connection that plugs into the television, and two female connections, into which separate HDMI cables can be plugged. When you want to switch between accessories, such as a DVD player or a stand-alone streaming device, you simply slide the switch to that cable.

You can also choose a powered splitter into which several HDMI cables can be connected. When the selected accessory is turned on, a power sensor in the splitter selects that connection to transmit to the television.
